Listening Prayer: Getting Started
Preparation for Listening Prayer
Before beginning listening prayer, there is some prep work that needs to be done. This part of the process can be done in prayer, while journaling, or with a friend. If you are an external processor, you might do best by talking to a friend. If you normally find clarity by writing things down, do that. A list of examples of situations that are commonly brought to God in listening prayer are at the bottom of this article.
Questions to Get You Started
"Jesus, what are the underlying roots behind my ____ (depression, anger, anxiety, fatigue, etc.)?"
"Jesus, You know ____ better than anybody—search my heart and know me, know my innermost being. You know where I first experienced this feeling. Would You take me to the very root?"
"Jesus, what did I begin to believe about myself (God, or others) growing up (or at this time of my life)?"
Don't give up if nothing happens immediately. Surprising thoughts or feelings might emerge. This is good—they're probably connected. It can be awkward at first.
Digging Deeper
"When did this feeling of ____ (negative core belief) begin? (You may be taken to/reminded of a specific memory or pattern of events.)"
"Jesus, would You gently take me back to my early years as a teenager, to my childhood, or even before this?"
It may be necessary to SIT IN IT for longer than comfortable. Stay there—in the painful thing you want to avoid.
What is Jesus saying to you in this? (Truth about self, God, others.)
Write down the impressions that come your way: images, scripture, songs, stirrings.
Listen deliberately.
What is the truth in your core being/identity? (I am... I can... I did...)
